Local Suppliers - Food

Wherever possible, we ensure that all our produce is locally sourced and from local suppliers. If we can get it locally we will. And whilst the Royal Oak's menu changes with the seasons, we will never move from our commitment to high quality produce. To help showcase the area's abundant food and drink produce, the Royal Oak, in association with local suppliers, farmers and producers, hosts its very own farmer's market each summer – keep an eye on the website for more details.

Most of our meat comes from Vicar's Game www.vicarsgame.co.uk , just up the road in Ashampstead. It specialises in the very finest quality English meat and game, and has been supplying the best restaurants, butchers and farm shops for over 100 years.

It is committed to dealing in local game bought direct from game keepers and hunters. Their bacon is all dry cured on site and is amazing; they hand make over 50 varieties of sausage, producing over 2 tons a day; they have their own smoke house; they run butchery classes, and have a farm shop which is well worth a visit.

Fish comes from the celebrated Flying Fish Seafoods Company www.flyingfishseafoods.co.uk in North Cornwall. They buy sustainably sourced fish daily from local markets in Looe, Brixham, Newlyn and Plymouth. They promise to supply the finest fish from ship to plate within 48 hours.

Flying Fish Seafoods is a proud supporter of the Marine Stewardship Council and the Responsible Fishing Scheme. They ensure supplies can be traced back to fisheries and vessels that operate sustainable policies, and only promote fish that are available in plentiful volumes. They work closely with industry partners to encourage ethical choices in seafood and preserve our abundant sources of marine life.

Our eggs are all free range and come from nearby Beechwood Farm, 2 miles away in Hampstead Norreys. It is a traditional family farm dedicated to supplying high quality eggs from small flocks. Their hens roam free in woodland and pasture and are fed a high quality cereal based diet.

The cheese comes from the amazing Grey's Cheese in Pangbourne, one of the very great regional cheese suppliers. Barbara and her team are passionate about cheese, and a lot of her cheeses are matured in the shop. The delicious Barkham blue comes from just down the road near Wokingham, and the incredible Cerney Ash goat's cheese is from North Cerney in the Cotswolds. Grey's cheese is so much more than a cheese shop – visit yourself to see the amazing selection of European charcuterie, continental wines and olive oils.

For fruit and veg we use a local company, Fishers of Newbury, who source as much locally grown produce as they can to ensure we receive fresh, local and delicious produce. All of our wild mushrooms are hand picked by the staff from Bucklebury, 2 miles away. All of our wild berries come directly from the bushes of Yattendon estate.

All of our bread comes from Bramley Village Bakery, www.bramleybakery.co.uk, a traditional, family run bakery.

One of our regulars even supplies us with his unique smoked butter which he smokes himself at the pub – truly a delicious flavour.
